Good Night, Gorilla

Good Night, Gorilla (1994) by Peggy Rathmann

This picture book is one of my favorites.  It is almost in the wordless category; the only words consist of a zookeeper saying “Good Night” to each animal.  It’s got humor and charm and a bunch of repeated and detailed objects to find on each page.  (Look for the balloon, the moon, the banana, and, on a few pages, people peeking out of their window.)  The mischievous gorilla is completely lovable and loved, as you may note in the photo on the bedside table.

(Peggy’s website has some cute activities to accompany another book of hers.  In reading the About the Author page and seeing her picture, I immediately decided I want to be friends with Peggy if ever possible.)

Long Live the Queen

Long Live the Queen (2017) by Gerry Swallow

Elspeth is back in this fun and quirky comedy by Gerry Swallow.  Elspeth’s former doll, Farrah, now queen of Winkieland, has been kidnapped by the evil Mary Mary.  Viewed as a hero in this land of nursery rhymes, Elspeth isn’t so sure this time about her ability to save the day.  But with her unique gang of friends in tow, Elspeth manages once again to use her wit and tenacity to make things right.

Gerry’s clever and witty writing never ceases to amaze me. I read this one out loud (mostly) to my six-year old, and she loved it too. Now, we are eagerly waiting to see when the next book in the series will be released!

The Watermelon Seed

The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli

What kid hasn’t imagined the awful things that might happen inside his tummy if he swallowed a watermelon seed?  In this book, a watermelon-loving crocodile does just that.  After swallowing a seed, this crocodile plays out all the scenarios that must be going on inside.

There’s no heartfelt message or sentimental tears at the end of this book; it’s purely for fun—short, colorful, and silly .  My one-and-a-half-year old can’t get enough of this book right now, and our six-year old loves hearing it over and over as well.  I’m excited to read more by Greg Pizzoli!

Darth Vader and Son

Darth Vader and Son (2012)  by Jeffrey Brown

This is a book of one-page comics that show what life would be like for Darth Vader if he were spending time with a four-year old Luke Skywalker.  I don’t know Star Wars that well and had to have some of these cartoons explained to me further, but most of these stand on their own, even for those of us with limited Star Wars knowledge.  They will be especially funny to parents or to anyone who spends time with young children.

I happened to first read this book soon after giving birth to our second child, a time when my emotions were a big, dramatic jumble of very high highs and very low lows.  And so, as I read these over and over to our own four-year old, while nursing her brother, I laughed out loud uncontrollably… as in… I CouLD. NOT. stop. laughing.  I’m pretty sure this book is funny even to a person of average emotional range, but these comics hold a special place in my heart for all the joy they brought me in those early, raw days and weeks after giving birth.

Ling and Ting books

Ling and Ting stories by Grace Lin

These are silly stories.  These are fun stories.  These are Ling and Ting stories!

If you are a fan of the Frog and Toad books like we are, you will love Ling and Ting.  There are four books total and each book is broken up into six very short stories, or “chapters.”  These are a great transition into longer books for read-alouds or perfect books for beginning readers.  Ling and Ting are darling and simple and sweet, and Grace Lin is the best!

These books do not use contractions.  These books do not have long sentences.  These books will not disappoint.
