The American Sign Language Phrase Book

Lou Fant and Barbara Bernstein Fant (2008)

This book is a wonderful introduction to American Sign Language.  While I’ve been learning signing vocabulary on my own for a little while, this book begins to explain how the language itself is formed.  ASL is very different from signing exact English, and I feel this book does a great job explaining how to construct phrases and sentences.  The illustrations throughout the book are clear and easy to follow, so while learning the structure of the language, I was also able to review and learn new signs.  This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in learning more about ASL.  Now if I could only find a group to practice with…

Hanukkah Bear

Hanukkah Bear (2013)

written by Eric A. Kimmel, illustrated by Mike Wohnoutka

Bubba Brayna’s delicious-smelling latkes attract a very large and hungry guest whom the elderly woman mistakes for the rabbi.  The good-natured Bubba Brayna encourages her guest to enjoy an evening of Hanukkah activities and traditions, despite some initial confusion and resistance by Bear.

This is a sweet, fun story for Hanukkah, and I absolutely adore Wohnoutka’s illustrations of Bubba Brayna and her cottage.

Latkes, Latkes, Good to Eat

Latkes, Latkes, Good to Eat by Naomi Howland (1999)

Sadie and her four younger brothers are poor and hungry, until Sadie is given a magic frying pan in return for her kindness to an old woman.  Now she can cook batches of golden, lacy latkes, but only she knows the magic words to start and stop the cooking.  Things get out of control when her brothers’ curiosity gets the better of them.  But all ends well with a very merry Chanukah gathering.

A retelling of Brothers Grimm “Sweet Porridge,” this folktale leaves me wishing I, too, had a magic latke pan.  With a recipe included and scrumptious descriptions of these lacy potato treats, this book inspires me to get cooking.

Dumpling Days

Dumpling Days (2012) by Grace Lin

Ever since reading my first Grace Lin book, I’ve been hooked.  Like The Year of The Dog, Dumpling Days is a fiction book based on some of Grace’s childhood experiences.

Pacy and her family head to Taiwan for the summer to visit relatives and celebrate her grandmother’s 60th birthday party.  Reluctant to make this trip at first, Pacy ends up finding a world of life lessons awaiting her.  She is constantly surprised by new sights and traditions.  While some parts of the trip make Pacy uncomfortable— not knowing the language and learning some lessons the hard way— she also finds joy as she learns more about Taiwan, her family, and herself.

I loved this book.  It’s simple in that it basically follows Pacy and her family as they explore Taiwan, but there’s so much more to it.  I felt like I learned a lot about Taiwan’s culture, right along with Pacy.  The book is scattered with lovely, little sketches by Ms. Lin of some of the simplest-seeming things — a picture of their meal or the dress she wore to dinner or even the toilet that played music — but they all add so much to the book.  Even our 3-year old has fallen in love with this book.  We “read” it every night now; I flip through the pages, summarizing the story and pointing out the pictures.  For The Year of the Dog, Grace Lin posted a small discussion of what parts were fiction vs. what parts were true; I kind of wish she had done so with this book as well.  She does have a dumpling recipe posted on her site, which I’m so eager to try!

Anyway, this is a great book, which I’ve already ordered to have our own copy at home.
